orienate
/ˈɔɹiɛnˌeɪt/ verb
Latin root: oriēns Wiktionary
verb Definition from Wiktionary (CC BY-SA). Pronunciation from Wiktionary, via Kaikki.org. More about orienate at Wordnik → Where our words come from →
- To orientate, orient (oneself or something); to be able not to get lost.
- To change (or make something change) for or get accustomed (or make something get accustomed) to a new situation, adapt.
- To point (something) in a particular direction.
Origin
Probably from an incorrectly relatinized form of orientate, from Latin oriēns (“orient”, orient- in compounds) + -ate (verb-forming suffix), or from a misspelling of the same (see the citations page). Compare oriency and orience as well as eventerate.
